Our History

In 2005, Marilyn and Suzie, enthusiastic spokeswomen for WomenHeart, and members of the San Diego area chapters of WomenHeart, decided they would like to show support for other women with heart disease, by giving them hand-made red scarves.  Their goal was to give hand- made red scarves to women undergoing cardiac procedures, and to members of the WomenHeart support groups. Marilyn, Suzie, and their friends, started knitting.  It soon became clear that there was no way that they, even with the help of dedicated friends, could make all the scarves that were needed.

The next idea, was to reach out to craft groups, asking for their support in making red scarves for women with heart disease.  In exchange, Marilyn and Suzie provided information about heart disease in women, with the ultimate goal of empowering women to improve their heart care/ heart health.

The first group to partner with HeartScarves, was The Palomar Handweavers’ Guild of Escondido, CA.  In February of 2006, they held a “gathering-in” of the scarves. You can view the basketful of marvelous scarves presented to HeartScarves by the weavers, and see pictures of the meeting, as well as pictures of individual scarves.

A member of the Palomar Guild, led us to the North Coast Knitters’ Guild of Encinitas, CA.  In May of 2006, the knitters’ guild filled the scarf basket again. As you will see by clicking here, the request for red scarves from the North Coast Knitters’ Guild, resulted in a glorious collection of scarves of all shades of red, and remarkable patterns and textures.

HeartScarves  presented scarves to prominent physicians at a health Fair at Pachanga, (click here);  The Lavender Fields of Valley Center, CA, hosted a benefit for HeartScarves on Mother’s Day, 2006 (click here).

HeartScarves continues to grow. Scarves keep coming in from individual knitters, and from knitting groups like the La Costa Glen Busy Needles.  The Palomar Handweavers’ Guild is again making scarves for us. HeartScarves, and The Palomar Handweavers’, will have joint exhibits of the red scarves made by guild members, in Vista, and In Escondido, CA. Pictures from these events will make their way to this website.

With great excitement, WomenHeart of Central Mississippi, established the second HeartScarves chapter in 2006 with Tina Bradford as coordinator.  The beat goes on!
